WTI crude oil prices rise nearly 6% as geopolitical tensions escalate, with markets responding to Iran’s threats and ongoing conflicts.
WTI crude oil prices are staging a notable one-day advance, trading just above the $91.00 handle in the North American afternoon, marking an increase of almost 6% on the day. Meanwhile, Brent crude is pressing the $95.00 area, up nearly 5%, placing both benchmarks at levels not seen since early June.
The nature of this price movement is significant, as it has consistently trended upward since the day began. Each dip in the prices has been quickly absorbed, suggesting that futures are trading in alignment with the current market conditions rather than lagging behind, signaling a repricing rather than a typical reflexive trading response often seen in response to such headlines.
The flow of headlines supporting this rally has offered valid justification for the increase. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has spent the week asserting Tehran’s intent for a powerful retaliation against any strike on Iranian infrastructure, branding Washington’s actions as unlawful. Additionally, the Houthi group, known as Ansar Allah, announced a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia earlier in the week and has reportedly struck two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, thereby converting threats against Saudi oil flows into a real pressure point.
Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, has also weighed in from Manila, directly addressing Iranian provocations by referring to Trump’s strategy as a ‘head for an eye’. His comments highlighted that the price of oil would continue to rise until Tehran ‘comes to its senses’. He added that the aim was more about preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon than pushing for regime change. This line has been reiterated multiple times over recent days, emphasizing the positions held by the U.S. administration regarding the conflict.
For much of July, the oil market response has seen a tendency to fade significant geopolitical events, with traders often reacting nervously. However, the response seen today indicates a shift in sentiment, as previous approaches of treating such headlines as market noise have not materialized this time. The anticipation of ongoing retaliation appears to suggest that disruptions to oil supplies may extend beyond the immediate region.
A look back to recent trading sessions offers a contrasting perspective; just three days ago, market activity reflected typical headline-reactive trading, where an early high for WTI just above $84.00 triggered fluctuations through the afternoon, indicating a sensitive market to social media posts that influenced price movements. The volatility noted during that session wasn’t observed today as WTI has established higher lows moving through the day, ascending from an opening price near $86.50 to just above $91.00, while Brent climbed from over $90.50 to its current levels.
The daily chart provides additional context, with WTI now trading over a third higher than its mid-July lows, showcasing a recovery that has advanced within three weeks. Such steep movements without significant price rejections signal the establishment of a renewed war premium, suggesting that this price behavior is a feature rather than a reaction to market news.
Futures market readings support this argument, with the WTI front-month contract nearing $92.00 and Brent returning to above $100.00 for the first time since May. Given the current state of Gulf exports, which are running at about half their pre-war volumes, along with challenges in Strait tanker traffic and U.S. strategic reserves at their lowest since 1983, the outlook for crude oil remains precariously linked to geopolitical tensions and supply constraints.
Resistance levels have been established, with the $91.00 mark identified as the immediate cap for WTI, while Brent tests $95.00, approaching previous highs. On the downside, the market’s support floor lies around $86.50, with key levels established at $85.00 and the critical moving average near $81.00 as the July advance stabilizes market expectations. The market sentiment appears bullish, supported by both measures and current technical analysis.
