Connor Onion will take over from Jason Benetti as Fox Sports’ No. 2 play-by-play announcer for college football, a move confirmed by sources. Onion will team up with analyst Robert Griffin III for the upcoming season, as Benetti transitions to NBC where he will serve as the lead MLB broadcaster and work on college football and basketball.
Onion’s background includes calling games for both Fox and the Big Ten Network. This shift in Fox’s announcing team retains Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt as the network’s top college football duo.
Griffin, who joined Fox Sports last season as a game analyst, comes into this new partnership after a previous stint with ESPN. Griffin, a retired NFL player, expressed gratitude to Benetti for his mentorship, stating, “He’s made me better, showing that a booth doesn’t have to sacrifice knowledge for entertainment.” Following Benetti’s departure, it’s now Onion’s chance to prove himself in the high-pressure environment of live broadcasts.
