George Gibney Found Guilty of Sexual Abuse in Ireland

Former Irish national swimming coach George Gibney convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse and attempted rape involving young athletes.

A former national swimming coach of Ireland, George Gibney, has been convicted after a jury determined he sexually abused four female athletes and attempted to rape one of them during the 1970s and 1980s. The trial, which concluded on Monday, involved over seven hours of jury deliberation before reaching its verdict.

During the proceedings at the Central Criminal Court, Gibney, aged 77, was faced with 79 charges in total. He pleaded guilty to five of those charges at the beginning of the trial but denied the remaining counts. Ultimately, the jury found him guilty on 39 counts of indecent assault and on one count of attempted rape.

The jury was directed to enter not guilty verdicts on 33 counts pertaining to two of the complainants. Following the verdict, the judge ordered that Gibney be remanded in custody, with sentencing scheduled for July 29.

The charges stemmed from allegations made by young girls who were aged between eight and 14 at the time of the alleged incidents. Gibney’s return to Ireland, following a lengthy absence of over 30 years, came after a request for extradition by the Irish government. He had been arrested last year in Florida by U.S. Marshals.

Prior to his extradition, Gibney had not been in Ireland for more than three decades. His case gained renewed attention after several individuals came forward with allegations against him, highlighted in a BBC podcast titled “Where is George Gibney?”. A fresh investigation into Gibney’s conduct was initiated in 2020 by a specialist unit within the Garda National Protective Services Bureau, which ultimately led to charges being recommended for prosecution three years later.

Supporters of the victims expressed feelings of relief and solidarity after the verdict was announced. Women present in the court were seen embracing friends and gardaí (Irish police) following the decision.
