Kylian Mbappe condemns racist comments from Paraguayan senator following France’s World Cup victory, with the French FA filing a lawsuit.
France captain Kylian Mbappe has strongly condemned Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she made a series of racist remarks aimed at him on social media. The criticism came after France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the last-16 stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Following the match, Amarilla took to social media to attack Mbappe, questioning his background and upbringing in a vile tirade. In a passionate response, Mbappe stated: “You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup. I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”
Amarilla’s remarks escalated further, with the senator belittling Mbappe’s intelligence and background by suggesting that he had “not even learned to write”. She even stated that he had sucked on coconuts instead of breast milk, labeling him a “colonised Cameroonian” who was indeed “resentful, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly,” and absurdly expressing regret that the Paraguayan team had not physically assaulted him during the match.
Following the backlash, the French Football Federation (FFF) has taken decisive action by classifying Amarilla’s comments as criminal behavior. In an official statement, the federation expressed their condemnation of her remarks, stating: “The racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbappé are utterly despicable and unacceptable. These remarks are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as elsewhere.” The FFF confirmed that they will file a report with the public prosecutor’s office to initiate legal proceedings.
The federation further expressed their full support for Mbappe, emphasizing their commitment to fighting against all forms of racism and discrimination. They highlighted that the French national team represents France and that her comments insult not just Mbappe but the entire nation.
In addition to the FFF’s legal actions, Mbappe has garnered significant support from the French government. Sports minister Marina Ferrari has publicly backed the football star, echoing the sentiments of FFF president Philippe Diallo in condemning Amarilla’s actions. As the legal process unfolds, the French team remains unified in their disdain for such discrimination while they prepare to face Morocco in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
