Palmeiras academy chief praises youth setup after selling Allan to Manchester City in a €40m deal, highlighting the club’s talent development.

Palmeiras youth academy coordinator Joao Paulo Sampaio has praised the club’s talent pathway following an agreement to sell attacking midfielder Allan to Manchester City for €40 million. The 22-year-old was recognized on Wednesday at Nubank Parque, where the Brazilian club celebrated this significant European export.

Before the Copa do Brasil match against Santos, Allan received a commemorative plaque on the field. Club president Leila Pereira and Sampaio presented the award, which was met with warm applause from the supporters.

Sampaio noted that sending another homegrown talent to a European powerhouse reflects the strong collaboration between the scouting department, the management, and the senior coaching staff. He remarked, “It is a collective effort at Palmeiras. We develop the athlete, we scout the athlete, but it is the senior setup that truly showcases them, which is largely due to head coach Abel Ferreira and his staff. While the board deserves credit for the negotiations, this is undeniably a loss for the team. However, it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up, both for the player and the club; hence, it is a mutual joy.”

Palmeiras has fortified its reputation as one of South America’s leading talent factories, attributed to sustained investment in their youth ranks. Sampaio elaborated on the club’s prosperous future: “Palmeiras has academy talent for at least the next ten years. It’s straightforward to speak of generational talents, but Allan has developed exceptionally and is leaving at 22. The academy is a school, and the more foundation we provide, the better. He is ready for this next step, and we believe he will be very successful. Every year there will be several. Palmeiras fans are witnessing the best phase in the club’s history and have every reason to be optimistic.”

With Allan’s departure, Ferreira faces the challenge of reshaping his attacking lineup as the team approaches a series of crucial league and cup matches. The midfielder is set to travel to England for a medical examination and to finalize his move to Enzo Maresca’s squad before the transfer window closes. After a convincing 3-0 victory in the first leg against Santos in the Copa do Brasil last 16, Palmeiras is well-positioned to maintain their momentum in the league.
