Gary Neville names Liverpool’s Isak and Wirtz as disappointments in their season opener against Newcastle, urging them to improve their game.
Gary Neville has pointed out Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz as Liverpool’s two biggest disappointments following their opening-weekend draw at Newcastle. The former Manchester United defender expressed confidence in their potential, emphasizing the need for improvement from the high-profile duo.
Both players were expected to provide a significant impact after a promising pre-season, but their performances failed to meet expectations in the match at St James’ Park. Isak, who returned to his former club, played the full 90 minutes but did little to make a mark, while Wirtz was substituted just after the hour mark.
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, he remarked, “The big thing for Liverpool is they’ve got this quarter-of-a-billion-pound front two, Isak and Wirtz, and bloody hell, we’ve been kind to them. They’re going to have to start playing sooner or later or else they’re going to get quite a lot of criticism.”
Neville further commented on Wirtz’s performance, noting, “I don’t see the tenacity in Wirtz in particular. I just see a nice player moving around the pitch, not really ever looking like he’s busting a gut to do anything.” His critique didn’t stop there, as he added, “I want to put a rocket up him because there’s ability there, there’s talent there, the understanding of his position.”
Despite the disappointing display, Neville is optimistic that both players, who showed promise during pre-season matches, can find their rhythm as the season progresses. “I’ve watched them both for 12 months, and I do actually have faith in them,” he explained. “Isak’s an exceptional player, and we’ve seen it. I never saw anybody give Gabriel and Saliba or Van Dijk and Konate a tougher time as Isak did when he played at Newcastle in a black and white shirt. I’ve seen him be devastating.”
With Liverpool having invested £125 million in Isak, there is an expectation for him to deliver on the pitch. “Liverpool fans and his teammates need to see that,” Neville stated. He also urged Wirtz to reassess his contributions now that he has settled in. “He needs to sort himself out. Enough’s enough now, we’ve talked about him enough. He’s young and he’s come to a different country,” Neville commented.
Wirtz had previously impressed during pre-season, especially while playing as a shadow striker. However, Neville highlighted the need for him to adjust when playing behind Isak, stating that he sometimes drifts too deep or wide, diluting his effectiveness. These adjustments could be critical as Liverpool navigates the challenges of the league.
As the season unfolds, both Isak and Wirtz will be under the spotlight. The onus is now on them to step up and justify their hefty price tags, with fans and pundits alike eager to see a turnaround in their form.
