Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty leaves practice with a suspected ankle injury, raising concerns ahead of the upcoming NFL season.

Ashton Jeanty was helped off the field after diving for a pass in Sunday’s practice. The Las Vegas Raiders running back suffered what is believed to be a sprained ankle during the session, according to a league source.

The team is currently uncertain about the duration of Jeanty’s absence, but it is thought that he has avoided a long-term injury. The incident occurred as Jeanty executed a route during a team drill and dove for a throw from quarterback Kirk Cousins, which was too low and just out of reach. Jeanty fell awkwardly and received immediate medical attention from team trainers before being assisted off the field.

Notably, he was unable to put any weight on his right leg and did not return to practice. Following the incident, the Raiders took a moment to reflect and hold a silent prayer before resuming their training session.

No official statement has been released by the team post-practice.

Entering his second year with the Raiders after being selected sixth overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, Jeanty made a significant impact last season, leading all rookies with 266 rushes and 975 yards. There are high hopes for his performance under the guidance of new head coach Klint Kubiak.

Reflecting on his aspirations for the upcoming season, Jeanty stated on July 30, “I think just to take a step forward in each and every facet of the game. I wouldn’t say so much stats-wise, but I think if I just continue to get better, then all those things will come.”

If Jeanty is sidelined for any period, rookie Mike Washington Jr. will likely step up to fill the gap in the backfield. Washington, a fourth-round pick, has had an impressive training camp and preseason, accumulating 119 yards on 15 carries, including standout runs of 53 yards against the Arizona Cardinals and 33 yards against the Houston Texans.

After the Texans game, Kubiak commented on Washington, saying, “I see a very talented young man with a bright future ahead of him that’s extremely humble and hardworking. If he just keeps that mindset, he’ll keep getting better.”

Beyond Jeanty and Washington, the Raiders’ backfield depth includes third-year player Dylan Laube, veteran free-agent pickup Dare Ogunbowale, and undrafted free agent Roman Hemby.
