Marc Guehi’s unexpected midfield role plays a key part in Manchester City’s comeback win against Bournemouth, showcasing tactical flexibility.

Marc Guehi took center stage in an unexpected tactical shift during Manchester City’s thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Initially training as a defender, Guehi found himself pushed into a central midfield position, a move orchestrated by manager Enzo Maresca that proved crucial for the home side.

The match kicked off with Guehi appearing ready to contribute from the back line, but as the game progressed, he seamlessly transitioned into a holding role. This alteration was pivotal, allowing City to disrupt Bournemouth’s formation effectively and regain control of the match’s tempo.

Reflecting on this surprising shift after the final whistle, Guehi shared insights with Sky Sports: “It was just an idea the manager had; we worked on it in the week. We’re trying different things, trying different solutions for the team. I’m glad today it paid off in the end.” His confidence grew throughout the match, indicating how much support he received from his teammates.

The victory not only demonstrated Maresca’s tactical flexibility but also showcased Guehi’s versatile skill set beyond his typical center-back role. His performance was statistically impressive, seeing him win all three tackles he attempted — more than any other player on the pitch — alongside an impressive 94.9% completion rate on 59 passes.

After the match, Guehi further elaborated on his adaptability, emphasizing the collaboration with his teammates, which allowed him to feel comfortable in the midfield position: “I enjoyed it simply because I got so much help from so many people. When you have that, you feel comfortable to just go out and play and do what you can for the team.” He humorously speculated on his positioning for the next game: “Who knows? Maybe up front. We’ll see.”

Maresca, who has been proactive in experimenting with player positions, praised Guehi’s outstanding performance in his new role, emphasizing he had always viewed the defender as capable of thriving in midfield. “Guehi has never played as a midfielder; today he was very good, so I am happy with the effort from the players,” he said on BBC Match of the Day. “Sometimes you visualize things. I know Marc from Palace, and I always thought he could play as a midfielder because he is very good. So we tried it for a few days, and I think he was quite good.”

Looking ahead, the City manager noted that this experiment could offer solutions in midfield, especially with the impending signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for a reported £86 million, who is expected to bolster the midfield alongside Elliot Anderson. Despite Guehi’s impressive showings, former City goalkeeper Joe Hart expressed reservations about the long-term viability of this tactical setup. He cited Bouaddi’s upcoming arrival as a reason to doubt the permanency of Guehi’s midfield role: “Anderson and Guehi is an interesting one in midfield, but that won’t be a long-term thing, especially with Bouaddi coming in.” Hart acknowledged the manager’s ongoing search for the right combinations amid a significant roster transformation.

This match not only secured valuable points for Manchester City but also demonstrated the team’s adaptability and the potential for innovative tactics moving forward.
