Tesla announces a significant recall of nearly 3 million vehicles in China due to safety concerns over door handle designs following several accidents.
In a major recall affecting the electric vehicle sector, Tesla has announced that nearly 3 million of its Chinese-made cars are being recalled due to safety issues linked to their door handle designs. The recall, which spans approximately 2.98 million vehicles, addresses growing concerns that the hidden door handles can be difficult to locate and operate during emergency situations.
Other brands impacted by this recall include notable Chinese manufacturers such as XPeng, Xiaomi, and Geely. The decision follows scrutiny relating to two fatal accidents involving Xiaomi EVs, where power failures may have hindered occupants from escaping after collisions.
Tesla’s vehicles included in this recall are the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. According to the company, the door handles are challenging to identify and operate due to their color being similar to the interior trim of the cars. Tesla stated, “In extreme situations such as a severe collision causing the vehicle’s low-voltage system to fail, this could hinder occupants from quickly opening the doors to escape and impede rescue efforts by those outside the vehicle, posing a safety hazard.”
To address the issue, Tesla plans to attach warning labels on the interior doors of the recalled vehicles and roll out a software update that will automatically lower the windows in the event of a crash.
Despite this recall, it remains unclear whether other affected manufacturers like XPeng, Xiaomi, and Geely will also implement similar measures globally. Furthermore, the use of hidden door handles in vehicles has been criticized following new regulations announced by Chinese authorities. Starting January 1, 2027, all cars sold in China will be required to have a manual release on both the inside and outside of their doors.
The increasing popularity of hidden handle designs has largely been influenced by Tesla’s Model S sedan, which has seen many Chinese automotive manufacturers adopting the sleek aesthetic since its introduction in 2014. Tu Le, founder of Sino Auto Insights, remarked that while the implementation of warning labels and software updates is a step taken by Tesla, it might be considered more of a “band-aid” solution rather than a long-term fix for the design-related safety concerns.
Additionally, Tesla’s door handles have come under investigation by US safety regulators due to reports that they occasionally cease to function, leading to instances where children were inadvertently trapped within the vehicles. In response to this, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has suggested creating a formal safety standard that all car manufacturers should adhere to.
As this situation unfolds, the automotive industry is closely watching how these recalls and regulatory changes will impact the future of vehicle safety and design in the market.
