Harry Kane shares his shift in perspective on returning to the Premier League as he nears a contract extension with Bayern Munich.
Harry Kane has expressed that his previous desire to return to the Premier League has greatly diminished since joining Bayern Munich. The England captain, as he approaches new contract discussions, noted that he no longer feels the same drive to pursue Alan Shearer’s legendary scoring mark.
After leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Bayern in 2023 for £86.4 million, many expected Kane to eventually return to England to add to his tally of 213 Premier League goals in an attempt to overtake Shearer’s record of 260 goals. However, Kane has revealed that his viewpoint has substantially changed during his time in the Bundesliga.
Speaking candidly after receiving the European Golden Shoe on Wednesday, Kane acknowledged the transformation in his personal goals and outlook. “When I first left, for sure it was something I thought – I would definitely be coming back. That itch isn’t there as much anymore. I am extremely happy here in Munich; it opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England and it has made me appreciate European football even more,” he shared.
Kane’s satisfaction isn’t just linked to his impressive goal-scoring record but also extends to his family life in Germany. As he enters the final year of his original four-year contract, reports indicate he is set to begin discussions about an extension to stay at the Allianz Arena.
The striker feels that Bayern’s current setup allows him to showcase his abilities better than ever before. He stated, “I just think the team we have here and the manager, my family is really settled here, it is just about being in the best place possible. Never say never, but for now I am concentrating on Bayern Munich and we will see what the future holds.”
Statistically, Kane is experiencing the most fruitful phase of his career, having scored 73 goals for club and country last season across all competitions. This remarkable output has reinforced his belief that leaving London was a positive step for his growth. Under the management of Vincent Kompany, Kane feels that he has evolved into a more well-rounded player, benefiting from a system balancing tactical discipline with offensive freedom.
“I think this is the best version of myself for sure. I think last season speaks for itself, from that sense the best season in my career no doubt,” Kane asserted confidently. He further remarked, “Since the boss has come in he has elevated my game to another level. That is down to the style of play, the way we attack and the way we defend, the way he gives players freedom to sometimes receive the ball deeper and sometimes arrive late in the box.”
While enjoying newfound success in the Bundesliga, Kane acknowledged that the tactical flexibility he currently benefits from was developed during his later years at Tottenham. He drew comparisons between his present role and the responsibilities he adopted under previous Spurs managers, particularly recalling how his game expanded beyond that of a traditional striker.
Now, Kane aims to continue his excellent form into the new season, aspiring to collect silverware when Bayern Munich faces Borussia Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup this Saturday. “I also had a lot of this and these kind of different positions during my Tottenham career as well, especially from the [Jose] Mourinho stage onwards, it was the same sort of thing – I had freedom to come deep and get the ball and I had a great relationship with Son Heung-min. It has been building but I think this season with the team I have around me, the players we have and the system we play with the coach, it has just elevated me to another level,” he added.
