Iran refutes Trump’s assertion of imminent talks, focusing instead on negotiations with Oman amid ongoing tensions in the region.
The Iranian foreign ministry has firmly rejected claims made by US President Donald Trump regarding impending talks between the two nations. Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, stated during a press briefing that there are no current plans for Iran to receive or send any delegations to the US. This assertion comes after Trump indicated on Sunday evening that discussions would occur the following Monday.
Baghaei emphasized Iran’s primary focus on negotiations with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz, stating, “We are now going to reach an understanding on a route acceptable to both sides – neither the northern route nor the southern route – but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security.” His remarks aim to clarify Iran’s position amid rising tensions following Trump’s comments.
During an interview while aboard Air Force One, Trump mentioned that he had decided against ordering military strikes against Iran, a decision influenced by discussions with Gulf allies such as Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. He recounted a conversation with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman where he posed the question: “What would you rather do? Would you rather us do this or not?” The crown prince reportedly expressed a preference for a diplomatic resolution over military action.
In another development, it was reported that an officer from the US Central Command’s intelligence branch circulated a message seeking creative strategies to apply pressure on Iran, heightening concerns about further military escalation in the region. This communication coincided with Trump’s recent threats against Iran.
On the same day, Iranian state media confirmed the execution of two individuals on charges of espionage and cooperation with Israel, drawing condemnation from human rights advocates. The executed, Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat, were accused of providing sensitive military information and coordinates to Israel during the ongoing conflict, which has seen significant violence since late February.
Additionally, recent Israeli military actions resulted in fire in southern Lebanon. Reports indicated that Israeli forces dropped phosphorus shells in several areas, including Yaroun and Bint Jbeil, coinciding with an airstrike early Monday morning near Nabatieh al-Fawqa. International laws govern the use of such incendiary weapons, which are prohibited in populated regions.
Despite a maritime blockade imposed by Houthi forces against Saudi vessels, two oil tankers reportedly navigated through the Bab el-Mandeb strait over the weekend, underlining the ongoing complexities and escalations in the conflict region.
