England’s Gary Neville criticizes squad depth ahead of World Cup round-of-32 clash against DR Congo as Reece James and Declan Rice face injury doubts.
England is set to face DR Congo in the knockout stage of the World Cup on Wednesday in Atlanta, with head coach Thomas Tuchel facing critical decisions due to injury issues within the squad. The absence of first-choice right-back Reece James, sidelined with a hamstring injury, adds to the team’s challenges, compounded by the earlier withdrawal of backup Tino Livramento for the same reason.
Gary Neville, a football expert and former England right-back, expresses concern over what he sees as a lack of respect for the full-back position, especially in light of the team’s current predicament. “England have once again disrespected the full-back position at a major tournament, leaving them short of cover at right back,” Neville stated. He believes that the injuries to James and Livramento should have been anticipated given their fitness histories, warning that such planning lapses could harm the team in crucial matches.
With James unavailable and Livramento already out, Tuchel must now decide between Djed Spence, who has been playing left back for Tottenham, or utilizing versatile center-backs Jarrel Quansah or Ezri Konsa in an unfamiliar role. “Tuchel should have foreseen this given James and Livramento’s injury records,” Neville said. He argues many predicted this situation would arise and that the decision-making around squad selection needed to be better informed.
As England prepares to encounter DR Congo, who secured their advancement to the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams in their group, Neville emphasizes the need for caution. The team finished behind both Colombia and Portugal in a competitive Group K. “Congo’s going to be tough,” he warned, alluding to the threats of potential counter-attacks that England has struggled against in earlier matches.
Neville mentioned performances against teams like Ghana and Panama, saying, “We have conceded a few in the last few games and on another day, we would have conceded a penalty against Ghana.” He highlighted the key players, including Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who he believes need to take the lead. “Kane and Bellingham are delivering, but the other eight have question marks over them in respect of injuries, form and who should be playing.”
Neville praised Bellingham’s recent performances, calling him a player who has matured into an elite talent. However, he expressed concern about the fitness of other key players like Bukayo Saka, who he described as a “gem” but noted that he has recently shown signs of fatigue. He believes that managing players’ fitness effectively is crucial, stating, “What I would do now is play players who are 100 percent fit. You might then be able to use Saka for 20 or 30 minutes at the end of games so he’s not having to play 90.”
Declan Rice’s role is also under scrutiny; his lack of fitness could pose a real problem for Tuchel. “When he was taken off at 3-2 in the Croatia game, people were saying he was just having his minutes managed. I didn’t believe it for a second. You do not take Rice off at 3-2 against Croatia unless there is a problem,” said Neville.
Neville wrapped up with an optimistic note on the overall squad potential. He said, “We have a great goalscorer in Harry Kane and we’ve got Jude Bellingham, who has turned up. He’s fantastic and demonstrated against Panama a different side to his game.” For England, the time has come to step up as they enter the knockout phase, where every match is pivotal. As Tuchel prepares his tactics, all eyes will be on how England performs without key players against DR Congo.
