American Airlines plans to reintroduce seatback screens on 800 jets, marking a significant shift in in-flight entertainment based on evolving customer preferences.
For years, American Airlines has embraced a strategy suggesting that passengers prefer watching in-flight movies on their personal devices. This perspective is shifting as the airline announced its plan to install seatback entertainment screens on approximately 800 of its single-aisle jets.
Starting in 2028, new Airbus and Boeing jets will be equipped with these screens, while retrofitting of existing planes will commence in the same year and continue into the early 2030s. The screens will feature built-in movies, television shows, games, and music content, along with Bluetooth connectivity to enhance the passenger experience. This change allows travelers to bypass the inexpensive wired headphones traditionally distributed before takeoff.
American Airlines is reversing its nearly decade-long move away from seatback screens, a shift that came about as the passengers’ preferences evolved. “In the years since, and particularly following COVID, it has become increasingly clear that customers, especially younger generations, value having access to multiple devices and larger screens throughout their journey,” a spokesperson remarked.

Moreover, the airline is expanding its premium offerings. Currently, about 25% of seats on its narrow-body flights are designated as premium, a figure expected to increase to roughly 40% in the coming years. This trend aligns with a broader industry focus on accommodating affluent travelers who are willing to spend more for enhanced experiences.
As airlines like Delta report substantial revenue increases from premium products—$6.92 billion in the second quarter, up 17% year-over-year—American Airlines is also keen to boost its performance in this area. Chief Financial Officer Nat Pieper noted during an earnings call that the airline’s premium traffic continues to surpass other segments, indicating a demand likely to remain stable even during economic uncertainties.
Investments in premium cabins are now a priority, and American Airlines has formed partnerships with brands like Champagne Bollinger and Lavazza coffee to elevate their offerings. Additional plans include expanding airport lounges at major hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth and New York JFK International, aiming to enhance the travel experience for higher-paying customers.
As the airline restructures its approach to in-flight entertainment and customer accommodations, American Airlines seeks to align its services with evolving consumer desires while positioning itself competitively in the ever-changing aviation market.
