Jamie Carragher backs Manchester City to win the Premier League over Arsenal, while dismissing chances for Liverpool and Manchester United.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has endorsed Manchester City’s chances of securing another Premier League title, suggesting that newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca will lead them to victory in his debut season at the Etihad. Carragher foresees a title race primarily between Manchester City and reigning champions Arsenal, dismissing the prospects of both Liverpool and Manchester United.
The pundit expressed that the championship battle will likely be a contest restricted to the blue side of Manchester and Arsenal. He is optimistic about Maresca’s capabilities to continue the club’s legacy, succeeding Pep Guardiola.
During an appearance on the Football Ramble podcast, Carragher elaborated on his reasoning. “Where we are right now, with a month to go transfer-wise, I can only see Arsenal or City,” he stated.
However, he did highlight an important factor regarding the future of midfielder Rodri, whom he considers pivotal to City’s success. Carragher reflected on Rodri’s significance, articulating, “I think City. The reason I think City is that I think they were still close last year. I know Pep’s gone, I get that. But if Rodri left for Real Madrid, I wouldn’t be saying that. What’s the point in selling Rodri?”
On the flip side, Liverpool supporters might have hoped for a resurgence under new manager Andoni Iraola. Yet Carragher was blunt, asserting that the squad requires considerable investment if they are to compete with the top two teams effectively.
He remarked, “Right now, I don’t think Liverpool are equipped to be thinking about a title. Who knows what’s going to happen over the next month, but I don’t think they’re close to that.” Carragher emphasized that Liverpool needs two solid defenders and a top right winger to be legitimate title contenders.
Furthermore, he voiced concerns regarding Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola, questioning the club’s transfer strategy: “They haven’t got one player who plays right wing in the squad.”
Shifting focus to Manchester United, Carragher acknowledged a positive change in their recruitment strategy but maintained skepticism regarding their title ambitions. He noted the shift from an obsession with high-profile signings to more strategic acquisitions, suggesting this could serve them well.
“Manchester United won’t win the league,” he stated decisively. “What I would say about Man Utd, it doesn’t feel like they’re on this mission to go and get this big name. It feels healthy for them.” He cited specific signings like Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans as potentially clever moves that reflect a more thoughtful approach on United’s part.
