David Raya is deemed the most unfortunate goalkeeper, yet celebrated as the best in the Premier League by ex-Arsenal players.
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Graham Stack labeled David Raya the “most unfortunate goalkeeper in world football,” while simultaneously asserting that the Spain international is arguably the “best” the Premier League has to offer.
At 30 years old, Raya enjoyed a triumphant season with Arsenal, where he secured another Golden Glove title. However, he found himself on the bench during Spain’s World Cup journey, a situation Stack described as perplexing.
Raya’s career trajectory has been impressive, transitioning from a loan spell at Southport in the National League in 2014-15 to making waves in the Premier League with Brentford in 2019 before moving to Emirates Stadium in 2023. Competing for the starting spot with Aaron Ramsdale, Raya eventually secured his position as Arsenal’s No.1.
Now a Premier League champion with three consecutive Golden Glove accolades, Raya still struggles for recognition in the Spanish national setup, remaining behind Unai Simon. Stack expressed his astonishment at Raya’s lack of game time, particularly in light of Spain’s World Cup performance.
“How on earth he doesn’t get to play in the World Cup is beyond me,” Stack remarked. He believes that Raya would be the starting goalkeeper in any other team globally and suggested that his omission is due to Simon’s persistent loyalty, despite Raya’s outstanding form for Arsenal.
Stack’s praise continued, as he declared, “But Raya, in my opinion, is most definitely the best goalkeeper in the Premier League for several reasons. If you look at his consistency, clean sheets, and match-winning saves, it’s evident.” He noted Raya’s proactive nature and growth in leadership since joining the club.
Raya’s contributions haven’t gone unnoticed by his Arsenal teammates. Forward Kai Havertz commented on Raya’s status, stating, “He is still underestimated in the world of football. For the last two seasons he has been the best keeper in the world.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta echoed this sentiment, labeling Raya “extraordinary, magnificent, and incredible,” emphasizing the goalkeeper’s importance to the team.
Despite not appearing in any matches during Spain’s World Cup win, Raya is ready to rejoin Arsenal as the club gears up for the upcoming Community Shield clash against Manchester City on August 16. The new Premier League season is set to kick off the following week, where Raya will likely reclaim his position as a starting goalkeeper for the Gunners.
