Artists from Jersey and Antigua and Barbuda are collaborating on a series of murals that showcase the unique heritages of their respective islands. The initiative, themed “Safe Haven Across the Sea,” aims to foster connections between the two communities through art.
The project will kick off with the creation of a mural at Elizabeth Marina in St Helier, planned for July 20 through July 23. Following this, the artists will travel to Antigua in October to work on another mural.
Three graduate artists from Jersey—Max Corbett, Aimée Cast, and filmmaker Toby Norman—are partnered with three students from Antigua State College: Joyce Murray-Watkins, Trinity Hughes, and Tse Pigott. This exciting exchange, a partnership backed by the governments of Jersey and Antigua and Barbuda as well as the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority and ArtHouse Jersey, is designed to reflect cultural ties and inspire future collaborations.
James Tyson, head of programming at ArtHouse Jersey, commented on the significance of the project, highlighting that it allows for introspection regarding both islands’ heritages and ongoing influence on their futures. Tyson noted, “This wonderful exchange is the continuation of a growing friendship between Antigua and Barbuda and Jersey that has provided opportunities for people from both islands to celebrate our respective cultures together.”
Furthermore, the collaboration provides valuable educational opportunities for the participating students. Mark Brown, the head of the fine arts and creative studies department at the Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies, emphasized that this initiative offers students a unique chance to work alongside their peers from Jersey, broadening their creative perspectives and nurturing international ties.
The exchange program will also include community workshops, enabling locals to interact with the artists and explore the themes that drive their work. The second mural in Antigua is expected to be unveiled in time for the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and Antigua Art Week in November.
