In a series of rare public appearances, James Dolan, owner of the New York Knicks, recently shared insights about how his NBA team’s success could influence his approach to running the New York Rangers. Dolan’s remarks came after he encouraged Knicks players to sacrifice in pursuit of the franchise’s first NBA title in 53 years. “If you do that, at the end of 10 weeks, we’re walking out of here with rings,” he asserted emphatically, signaling his unwavering determination to bring home a championship.

Dolan, who has been at the helm of Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. for nearly three decades, expressed that winning the championship could significantly alter public perception of him amidst longstanding critiques. Having finally achieved that elusive championship, he now turns attention to his other sports franchise, the Rangers, who have not won a Stanley Cup in 32 years.

When asked about the possibility of replicating the Knicks’ success with the Rangers, Dolan acknowledged, “That’s a big thing,” during a recent radio interview on WFAN. He noted that many of the same individuals who contributed to the Knicks’ success are also focusing on the Rangers, particularly highlighting his son, Quentin, who oversees conditioning and wellness for both teams.

Quentin Dolan has played an increasingly influential role since he began with MSG Sports as a director in 2021, evolving into his current position as senior vice president of player performance and science leader for both franchises. His emphasis on a data-driven approach to fitness and injury prevention is likely to grow, especially in light of the Knicks’ recent championship triumph.

Dolan hinted at a strategic transformation within the Rangers, indicating that the lessons learned from the Knicks will be crucial going forward. Although comparing the two leagues can be challenging due to differing roster constructions between the NBA and NHL, he is looking for philosophical parallels.

His previous strategy with the Knicks, particularly the hiring of Leon Rose as team president in March 2020, showcased a pivotal shift in mindset. Rather than pursuing the fanciest names, Dolan expressed the need for someone adept at attracting talent. He recounted a crucial realization: “I’m not going to worry about a GM who’s really good at strategy. What I need is somebody who’s the best collector of talent.”

Team president Chris Drury has struggled to bring elite players into the franchise, resulting in two consecutive seasons without playoff appearances. By failing to attract key talent, the Rangers have lost their competitive edge, evident as high-profile players like Dylan Larkin and Brady Tkachuk opted for other destinations.

Despite the Rangers’ challenges, the hiring of two-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Sullivan was seen as a step towards building a more attractive environment for players. Dolan recognized Sullivan’s potential to enhance the team’s culture but so far, the desired talent has not followed.
