Thalles de Souza shares his remarkable story of resilience and aspiration as he transitions from a tumultuous upbringing in Rio de Janeiro to attending Yale University.
Recounting a traumatic incident from March 2016, Thalles, only 13 at the time, found himself in a terrifying situation when police stormed his family’s home, guns drawn, in search of a relative. Living in Vila Kennedy, a community in Bangu, Rio de Janeiro, he describes how violence was a daily occurrence, with shootings prevalent around him. “I witnessed so many deaths — countless deaths,” he recalls, echoing the tragic normalcy of such events.
Raised by a single mother who faced her own hardships, Thalles grew up in an environment rife with gangs and corruption. “Every day, people were killed. It was normal to be playing soccer with my friends, right next to dead bodies lying in the street,” he said. This context shaped his childhood and filled him with a desire for a safer, better life.
In pursuit of a brighter future, Thalles’s mother devised a plan to move to the United States. Quietly saving money and securing loans, she worked tirelessly to apply for visas without revealing her intentions. Three months after that harrowing Sunday, the family relocated to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a stark contrast to the violence they left behind.
In Massachusetts, Thalles excelled academically. He attended local community college, where he maintained perfect grades, became active in campus life, served as student body president for two years, and dedicated time to community service. “I wanted to give back to the people who had welcomed my family,” he noted.
As he approached the end of community college, Thalles set his sights on transferring to a prestigious university. He had long admired Yale for its reputation in producing successful lawyers and judges, inspiring him to pursue his dream. Despite knowing that the acceptance rate was a mere 1.3%, he applied anyway, motivated by the possibility of changing his future.
When the acceptance email arrived, Thalles was filled with disbelief. He called in his mother and older sister to share the news: “I got into Yale!” Not only was he accepted, but he also received a full scholarship. “I still can’t believe it,” he expressed, reflecting on the significant achievement he had secured.
On a visit to Yale’s campus prior to starting, Thalles recalled his mother’s joy and pride, saying, “She tells everyone how amazing this is.” Her sacrifices throughout their tumultuous journey have led to this remarkable moment. Thalles concluded that his past would not define his future, embracing the potential he has to become more than just a statistic.
