Christopher Nkunku is on the verge of returning to RB Leipzig from AC Milan, with a loan deal nearing completion as he seeks more playing time.
RB Leipzig has reached an agreement in principle with AC Milan for the transfer of Christopher Nkunku, bringing the French forward closer to a return to Germany. The 28-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at San Siro under head coach Ruben Amorim, paving the way for his former club to secure a deal that includes an initial loan with an option to make the move permanent.
According to reports, RB Leipzig and AC Milan have agreed on a €3 million paid loan for Nkunku, with an option to finalize the move for €27 million. Nkunku had joined Milan from Chelsea in August 2025 for €37 million plus €5 million in potential bonuses, but his time in Italy has not met expectations. Having fallen out of favour during pre-season, he was left out of the squad for AC Milan’s Serie A opener against Torino.
Negotiations are now in the final stages, with minor details left to resolve before Nkunku completes his return to Leipzig. This move aligns with Amorim’s broader effort to overhaul the Rossoneri squad since taking over as manager. Following a disappointing campaign that saw the club miss out on Champions League qualification, the Portuguese manager has been decisive in reshaping his roster.
During the previous season, Nkunku struggled for form, managing only eight goals and three assists in 35 appearances. He faced tough competition for a starting position from players like Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic. Given that Goncalo Ramos also plays in the attacking line, Amorim has indicated that Nkunku does not fit into his long-term plans.
While Leipzig appears to be the frontrunner to finalize the agreement, Newcastle United is also monitoring the situation closely. The Premier League club has been in contact behind the scenes and might propose a direct permanent deal, which Milan may prefer to alleviate Nkunku’s salary burden.
Despite the interest from Newcastle, Nkunku’s focus remains on a return to the Bundesliga, where he previously shone with 70 goals in 172 appearances for Leipzig before his transfer to Chelsea.
With personal terms nearly completed and both clubs in alignment over the fee structure, Nkunku is expected to travel to Germany soon to undergo a medical examination. Unless Newcastle intervenes dramatically, his return to Leipzig should become official before the transfer window closes.
