Margarita Reutt, a Sochi resident, is accused of orchestrating the assassination of a Russian military commander in Crimea amid growing tensions.
In a shocking turn of events, Margarita Reutt, a 32-year-old resident of Sochi, has been accused of planting a bomb that resulted in the death of Robert Shageev, a deputy commander of a Russian Black Sea fleet submarine brigade. The explosion occurred just after dawn on August 13 in a quiet square in Sevastopol, Crimea.
The bomb, hidden inside a rubbish bin, detonated while Shageev was walking past in his naval uniform, killing him instantly. Within hours of the incident, investigators identified Reutt as a suspect and detained her. During a search, authorities discovered a remote control believed to have been used in the detonation of the bomb.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) has claimed that Reutt confessed to the attack, stating that she was promised a substantial payment in cryptocurrency by a handler connected to Ukrainian intelligence. Officials also noted that she showed no remorse for her actions. However, these claims have yet to be independently verified, and the FSB has a history of publicizing confessions prior to court proceedings.

The motivations behind Reutt’s alleged involvement remain unclear, though it has been suggested that her trial may take place behind closed doors, limiting her opportunity to present her account. Friends of Reutt describe a woman who had gradually grown disillusioned with her country, yet many express disbelief at her alleged actions.
“She believed that the country was going in the wrong direction,” said a longtime friend. “But I am still shocked she went so far.”
Following the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine’s intelligence agencies have been implicated in several high-profile assassinations of Russian military figures. Reutt’s case notably stands out as she is a Russian citizen accused of turning against her own country. Those accused of similar acts have often remained anonymous or met tragic fates.
Margarita, born Margarita Yakovleva and raised in Yaroslavl, was known for her adventurous spirit. Friends recount a childhood spent engaging in risky activities, climbing trees, and participating in parachuting. Years later, she became involved in local volunteer groups and was seen as a patriotic individual.
Yet, in recent times, her behavior appeared to shift. As the war escalated, acquaintances noted her increasing outspokenness against the government, culminating in a fine under Russia’s law against discrediting the armed forces.
The exact timeline of her transformation from an ordinary citizen to an alleged operative remains uncertain. As the investigation unfolds, many await further details on how a woman described by friends as warm and sociable embarked on such an audacious mission, now standing accused of assassination amid one of the most significant geopolitical conflicts in recent history.
