WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert emphasizes respect for transgender athletes in a memo to teams amidst ongoing discussions.
In a recent memo directed at team presidents, general managers, and coaches, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has highlighted the importance of integrity and respect regarding the participation of transgender athletes in the league. Engelbert’s communication comes in response to heightened discussions around this sensitive topic, particularly following comments made by Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham that favored the exclusion of trans athletes from women’s sports.
Engelbert did not provide a definitive stance on the league’s policies concerning transgender athletes in her memo. Instead, she presented three guiding principles for discussions on the matter. “First, we will always approach this topic thoughtfully, respectfully, and in alignment with the long-standing values of our league,” Engelbert stated. “Second, our player eligibility rules, unlike the eligibility rules of some other leagues and governing bodies, are collectively bargained. Lastly, preserving the integrity of our game and ensuring fair competition will always remain among the league’s highest priorities.”
The absence of specific mentions of transgender athletes in the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement— which states that only players who are women are eligible to participate in the league—does present complexities in the ongoing dialogue. Engelbert indicated that the league will engage in further discussions through a task force composed of team leadership, set to convene soon.
Following Cunningham’s controversial remarks, which suggested that young girls should not have to compete against biological men in locker rooms, the issue has sparked rallies and continued conversations among fans and the broader community. Engelbert acknowledged this growing concern, stating, “I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention.” She praised the league’s leadership for addressing questions that are being raised and encouraged ongoing dialogue around the subject.
Coaches within the league have found themselves frequently confronted with inquiries regarding this matter. Cheryl Reeve has emerged as a prominent advocate for the inclusion of transgender individuals, particularly for youth, while other players, including Golden State Valkyries All-Star Gabby Williams, voiced their support for welcoming transgender athletes into the league. Additionally, the Women’s National Basketball Players Association has publicly condemned any form of “hate, abuse, and demonization” directed toward the transgender community.
This evolving conversation underscores the complexities and sensitivities involved as the WNBA navigates its policies and practices concerning transgender athletes, ensuring that discussions are handled with the requisite respect and thoughtfulness that the commissioner emphasized in her memo.
