Officials in Wisconsin have initiated a homicide investigation concerning the police shooting of Corey Ruiz, who died following an altercation with law enforcement.

The incident occurred in Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, when Ruiz was shot after allegedly brandishing a knife during a struggle. At a press conference on Thursday, Police Chief John Patterson assured the public of full cooperation with state investigators, stating, “We will not hide from any aspect of this investigation.”

Ruiz, 38 years old, was reportedly shot after officers responded to a call about a man attempting to enter parked vehicles in the area. Prior to the encounter, he had fled the scene on a bicycle, which led to a pursuit by the four officers involved. According to police reports, Ruiz fell or was pulled from his bike during the confrontation and allegedly injured one officer during the scuffle.

Patterson detailed that an officer attempted to subdue Ruiz with a taser, but the effort was unsuccessful. Following this, one officer discharged their firearm three times, resulting in Ruiz sustaining critical injuries. He was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he later passed away.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway stated that the shooting would be thoroughly examined, asserting that “It does not matter who you are or what your past is; you should not lose your life as a result of an encounter with law enforcement.” In light of these events, all officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

Chief Patterson noted that while bystander footage of the incident has circulated, it provides only “one perspective” of the events, hinting that additional information may come to light as the investigation progresses. The state Justice Department’s Criminal Investigation Division will oversee the inquiry and will disclose the name of the officer who fired their weapon during the altercation.

This incident marks a troubling reminder in Madison, as it occurred on the same street where another fatal police shooting took place eleven years ago, involving a biracial man named Tony Robinson. In that case, no charges were brought against the officers involved.

As the investigation unfolds, community members have begun to voice their concerns. During Patterson’s press conference, a group of protesters interrupted, calling for greater transparency in the investigation.
