Luka Modric commits to AC Milan through 2027, boosting new coach Ruben Amorim after a challenging season, with hopes for a stronger campaign ahead.
AC Milan has officially announced that iconic midfielder Luka Modric will extend his contract with the club for another year. The Croatian maestro, who has been instrumental since joining the Rossoneri, will now remain at the San Siro until June 30, 2027, squashing any rumors of his potential retirement.
The club expressed their excitement over Modric’s decision in an official statement, emphasizing his ongoing contributions on and off the field. “AC Milan is pleased to announce that Luka Modric has signed a contract for a further season, until 30 June 2027. A key figure in the Rossoneri midfield since his arrival, Luka has brought his experience and quality to the service of the team, both on and off the pitch, with humility and great passion. One of the finest and most iconic players in world football, the Croatian will continue his journey in the Rossoneri shirt – with which he made 37 appearances and scored two goals last season – with the ambition to reach new, important milestones,” the statement read.
This contract extension comes at a crucial time for new head coach Ruben Amorim, who took the reins after a difficult 2025-26 season where AC Milan finished fifth, missing out on Champions League qualification. The continuity of Modric’s leadership is viewed as vital for Amorim as he works to stabilize the side during this transitional phase.
Modric, motivated by the recent disappointment with Milan and Croatia—having exited the World Cup in the round of 32—aims to end his illustrious career on a high note. Plans to retire from international duty following a farewell match on October 6 will allow Modric to focus entirely on AC Milan’s ambitions.
Despite turning 41 this September, Modric remains one of Serie A’s respected performers. Reports indicate that the financial terms of his new deal reflect his significant role within the club, with a salary package around €3.5 million, plus performance-related bonuses. This commitment indicates Modric’s confidence in the club’s direction under the current management.
Before signing the extension, there were speculations regarding Modric’s future, including potential retirement or a coaching role at his former club, Real Madrid. Instead, he will continue his journey with AC Milan, where he will continue wearing the number 14 shirt. Modric was central to the team’s setup under former manager Massimiliano Allegri last season and now with his future secured, the focus shifts toward the upcoming pre-season where Amorim will begin embedding his strategies.
