Vincent Pastore, the beloved actor famously known for portraying Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on HBO’s acclaimed series The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80. His passing occurred on August 1, when he was discovered in his Bronx apartment after neighbors reported not having heard from him for around three days. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.
Born on July 14, 1946, in the Bronx, Pastore pursued a degree in drama from Pace University and served in the Vietnam War before embarking on his acting career. He gained prominence in the 1990s with memorable roles in films such as Goodfellas, Men of Respect, and Carlito’s Way, but it was his role in The Sopranos, which premiered in 1999, that truly cemented his legacy.
Throughout his career, Pastore appeared in a variety of films, including Bachelor Party Vegas, Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn, Serving Sara, and Money Train, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Following his passing, his longtime manager, Bob McGowan, expressed his condolences: “Vinnie was a great guy; he would help anyone and was very charitable.” These words resonate with many who admired Pastore both on and off the screen.
The actor had faced health challenges in recent years, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014. In a previous interview with Broadway World, he detailed his treatment journey, stating, “I had surgery and 40 sessions of radiation in between rehearsals… It was pretty dramatic, but I had goals and my first goal was to make it to opening night. My next goal was to make it to the Tony Awards and my goal after that was to make it to the end of the run. I dance and I sing every night and am lucky to be here.”
Pastore is survived by his daughter, Renee, and his legacy continues to live on through the impact he made in both film and television.
In addition to Pastore’s passing, the broader Sopranos family mourns the loss, reflecting on the profound influence the series had on television as a medium. Following the news of Pastore’s death, tributes poured in, highlighting not only his contributions to entertainment but also his warm spirit and character.
The Sopranos creator is currently working on a new CIA thriller series for HBO, while Jerry Adler, another star of the series, also passed away recently at the age of 96. The show continues to resonate and influence fans and creators alike, marking a significant chapter in television history.
