Tragic Incident in Thailand: Eight Monks Killed

A tragic accident in Thailand sees eight monks killed after being struck by a pickup truck driven by an 11-year-old boy during a pilgrimage.

Nine Buddhist monks have tragically lost their lives, with several others injured, following an accident involving an 11-year-old boy driving his parents’ pickup truck in Mukdahan province, northeast Thailand. The incident occurred as a group of 35 monks and five lay followers walked along the roadside during a pilgrimage.

According to police reports, five monks died instantly at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. The authorities indicated that the boy, who took the vehicle without permission, lost control before crashing into the procession.

Police Major General Pairoj Thaiphutsa stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the legal proceedings for the child, noting, “The suspect is a child. The vehicle has been taken for forensic examination to determine the cause.” The boy is currently under the care of officials, including medical staff and his guardians.

Preliminary reports suggest that the child may have special needs, though further details have not been disclosed. Additionally, Mukdahan Hospital has made appeals for urgent blood donations to assist the injured monks, with three still in critical condition and at least five others suffering serious injuries.

Phra Sompong, a monk present during the incident, recounted his experience, stating, “I saw a boy driving a pickup truck approaching … then suddenly the truck hit at full speed and crashed us.” He described how he and another monk managed to evade the vehicle just in time, adding that the first nine monks in line were spared, while others were thrown into the air by the impact.

In Thailand, monks are held in high esteem by the public, who often express their respect through acts of goodwill, such as offering food and basic necessities during public processions. Following the crash, local governor Worayan Bunnarat emphasized the importance of road safety and the role of parents in preventing such tragedies, saying, “We’ve been very strict on road safety in recent years. This case should be a lesson not just for our province, but for the public in general when it comes to preventing road accidents.”

The boy’s parents were reportedly unaware that the pickup truck was missing until they notified police shortly after the crash, as they believed he was at home due to illness.
