Real Madrid reportedly eyeing a world record €223m transfer for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, sparking debate on his worth in modern football.

Michael Olise has caught the attention of Real Madrid, with reports suggesting the club is willing to pay a staggering €223 million (£191m/$255m) for the Bayern Munich winger. This raises the question: is he worth such an eye-watering fee? Former France international Louis Saha weighs in on this pressing topic, calling the figures ‘crazy.’

Currently, Brazilian superstar Neymar holds the record for the most expensive transfer, having moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 in a deal that shocked the football world. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is known for his ‘Galactico’ approach to team-building, not shying away from spending lavishly to secure top talent.

At just 24 years old, Olise has rapidly ascended through the ranks, breaking into the spotlight. His journey began in 2021 playing in the Championship for Reading, before securing a transfer to Premier League side Crystal Palace that same summer.

Since then, he has made a significant impact in the Premier League, participated in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and has now joined Bayern Munich, where he has enjoyed success, winning two Bundesliga titles. Olise’s remarkable stats from the 2025-26 season, showing 25 goals and 28 assists, have certainly placed him in La Liga’s crosshairs.

Real Madrid is reportedly keen on making history with any bid for Olise, looking to fortify their already star-studded attack, which features fellow Frenchman Kylian Mbappe and Brazilian Vinicius Junior.

In discussing Olise’s potential value, Saha commented, “It’s absolutely crazy numbers. But I do think that he deserves those kind of accolades and debates, because what the boy has done in the space of one to two years, it’s unbelievable.” He emphasized Olise’s drastic transformation from his time at Crystal Palace, stating that many haven’t fully appreciated his unique talent. Saha described Olise’s success as a beautiful story, noting the skepticism he faced and how he proved critics wrong.

Saha also reflected on Olise’s performance during the recently held 2026 World Cup, suggesting that despite not having scored yet, Olise could have easily netted multiple goals and provided several assists. He draws a parallel between Olise and the legendary Zinedine Zidane, noting how both display a unique confidence and flair on the field.

While Bayern Munich has consistently maintained their stance against selling Olise, holding him under contract until 2029, they may face increased pressure as offers come pouring in. France’s national team is gearing up to take on Paraguay in the last-16 of the World Cup, with a wealth of attacking talent at head coach Didier Deschamps’ disposal. The outcome of this match could further elevate Olise’s profile within the football community.
