Newcastle secured a vital 2-0 win against Tottenham, showcasing a clearer tactical identity under new coach Matthias Jaissle.
Newcastle’s tactical approach was clear in the Premier League as they achieved a 2-0 win away at Tottenham Hotspur, marking Matthias Jaissle’s first victory as head coach.
Three weeks after taking over from Eddie Howe, Jaissle’s side exhibited a clearer tactical identity than that of Spurs under Roberto De Zerbi, who has been at the helm for nearly five months.
While Newcastle were not particularly dazzling, they were organized and effective. The team unveiled its game plan within the first minute, as No. 6 Nico Gonzalez sent a diagonal ball from deep towards advancing right-back Amar Dedic. The winger, Anthony Elanga, positioned narrowly to occupy Spurs’ left-back Andy Robertson, created an overload.
Dedic headed the ball down to Elanga, whose hooked pass to the back post ultimately led to no goal but served as a crucial early warning for Spurs.
The synergy in Newcastle’s rotations—where the No. 6 drops between the centre-backs and the winger moves inside for the full-back to overlap—outmatched Tottenham’s approach.
Pedro Porro, club captain and nominal right-back for Spurs, struggled at right wing, only managing one completed cross and one notable shooting opportunity, thwarted by Newcastle’s defenders. On the opposite flank, Mathys Tel failed to effectively link with Robertson, who continuously made runs ahead of the ball.
The decisive goal came in the 62nd minute from a pattern the Newcastle side had consistently worked on during the first half. Nico, recently signed from Manchester City, found Dedic, who then headed the ball to Elanga.
Jaissle commented on Dedic’s play, saying, “He used to play in that system with that approach, emphasizing forward-defending behaviour and bravery in possession. We allow him to be offensive.”
Elanga, who had previously gone scoreless for Newcastle in the Premier League after transferring from Nottingham Forest, scored his second goal of the season with a well-placed shot off the post. The signing of Tonali from Newcastle to Spurs for £100 million encapsulates Tottenham’s current issues: a collection of high-caliber players who perhaps lack cohesion and a true identity.
Jaissle noted, “It’s important that we are versatile; otherwise, it would be too easy for our opponents to read what we are doing.” His adaptable system contrasts sharply with De Zerbi’s more rigid, pattern-based passing philosophy.
Lewis Hall’s performance shone as he defended excellently against Porro’s runs, making 14 significant defensive contributions and even executing a key goalline clearance to preserve Newcastle’s clean sheet. This marks the club’s first clean sheet since March.
Collectively, Jaissle’s squad executed their out-of-possession strategy effectively, with Jaissle telling reporters, “When you’re facing Tottenham, especially under De Zerbi, you need a clear plan. If you opt for a high press, you must commit fully.”
Newcastle’s 4-4-2 formation matched well against De Zerbi’s 4-box-2 shape, allowing them to creatively counter Spurs’ tactics.
One of the standout moments came from academy graduate Lewis Miley, who aggressively marked Rodrigo Bentancur. His dedication effectively disrupted Spurs’ build-up play and showcased Newcastle’s tactical intelligence.
On the other hand, Spurs are facing significant issues, grappling with injuries and a high turnover in players, coupled with a diminishing resolve; they have not won a Premier League match from a 1-0 deficit since November 2024.
Newcastle secured victory with two goals scored in a span of just ten minutes, as Tottenham once again conceded from an in-swinging corner.
De Zerbi’s track record has been troubling, with past seasons characterized by narrow wins and a lack of the incisive passing that once defined his time at Brighton & Hove Albion. There are real concerns over tactically how Spurs will adapt moving forward.
Newcastle is in a rebuilding phase, having parted ways with key players like Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Tonali over the past year, while Spurs continue to struggle with their identity and results, seeming to drift without a coherent strategy.
