Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta reaches out to Julian Alvarez in a bid to secure his transfer from Atletico Madrid amidst competition from Barcelona.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has taken decisive action by personally calling Julian Alvarez in a bid to persuade the Atletico Madrid striker to join the Gunners. With strong interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s firm stance against a sale, the club faces a challenging path to secure the Argentine international.
Arteta’s direct outreach comes as a final push to finalize a marquee signing before the transfer window closes, as reported by El Desmarque. The Gunners have long identified Alvarez, formerly of Manchester City, as their top attacking target, and Arteta’s personal involvement signifies how much the club wants the player.
While Viktor Gyokeres made an impressive impact in his debut season at Arsenal with a tally of 21 goals, the coaching staff believes that Alvarez’s caliber is essential for finally claiming the Champions League title, especially following last season’s heart-wrenching defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Despite Atletico Madrid’s coach Diego Simeone expressing a strong desire to keep Alvarez, the club’s leadership might be more amenable to a deal with Arsenal than facilitating a transfer to their La Liga rivals, Barcelona. According to Mundo Deportivo, Atletico has even sought to guide Alvarez towards the Premier League, even though this has yet to alter the player’s preference.
In an effort to make the deal more appealing, Arsenal is reportedly considering including Gyokeres as part of a swap arrangement, according to COPE. This could provide Simeone with an immediate replacement for the influential forward, thereby softening the impact of such a significant transfer. Nevertheless, the striker’s camp remains steadfast in their preference for Barcelona.
Barcelona’s ongoing financial issues could, however, tip the balance back in Arteta’s favor. With Hansi Flick reportedly searching for attacking reinforcements after Ferran Torres’ transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, the German coach may also target Gyokeres as an alternative, given that Barcelona has struggled to meet Atletico’s valuation for Alvarez.
As the future of the Alvarez deal hangs precariously, Arsenal has not put all their hopes on one player. They are also exploring options for Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen, who currently plays for Galatasaray. Talks with the Turkish club occurred last week, coinciding with broader negotiations regarding teenage talents Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli.
The forthcoming days will be crucial for Arsenal’s recruitment strategy as they await a definitive response from Atletico Madrid. Arteta’s personal involvement underscores the club’s commitment to securing Alvarez, yet the player’s reluctance to return to England remains the prominent challenge.
