Mark Ruffalo Responds to Paramount’s Antisemitism Claims

Mark Ruffalo defends his views against Paramount’s claims of antisemitism, emphasizing the importance of dialogue on Israel and corporate mergers.

Mark Ruffalo has responded forcefully to Paramount’s accusation of antisemitism after he criticized executives David and Larry Ellison for their influence in global affairs.

In a post on X, Ruffalo called the antisemitism claim “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” He clarified, “Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister is not the same as criticizing Jewish people.” The actor emphasized that his political beliefs stem from personal convictions and should not be misconstrued as hostility toward Jewish individuals, whom he holds in high regard.

Ruffalo’s comments followed his critique regarding a potential merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. He singled out the Ellison brothers as “classic oligarchs” and expressed concern for the broader implications of such a corporate consolidation.

In his statement, he noted how the merger could significantly impact editorial freedom and the livelihoods of thousands. The $111 billion deal could give one family considerable power, controlling major media outlets like CNN and HBO, with investments that may carry undisclosed influences over editorial content.

Ruffalo took to social media to share a video featuring Safra Catz, a Paramount board member, who discussed “frightening technologies” used by Oracle to assist the Israeli military post the October 7 terrorist attacks. He reiterated the importance of examining the business practices of the Ellisons, particularly Oracle’s role in contracts involving surveillance technology.

Paramount’s spokesperson responded, indicating that the company finds it troubling when antisemitic tropes surface in discussions framed around business matters. They described the use of terms like “genocide” and “apartheid” in this context as inappropriate and damaging. The company emphasized its zero tolerance for any form of prejudice.

As this dispute unfolds, Ruffalo remains firm in his stance, advocating for a necessary dialogue around corporate power and accountability.
