Manchester United is set to offer over €100m to sign Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni after missing out on previous transfer targets.
Manchester United are prepared to invest significantly to secure their top midfield target as INEOS looks to revamp the squad under interim manager Michael Carrick. After missing out on primary targets earlier in the transfer window, the Red Devils are now turning their attention to a potential statement signing from Real Madrid.
Reports suggest that Manchester United is willing to exceed the €100 million ($85 million / $114 million) mark that they previously offered for Mateus Fernandes, aiming to land their ‘dream signing’ in central midfield. When pursuing Fernandes, United had shown readiness to meet the £85 million ($113 million) asking price, which included potential add-ons. The club had been prepared to guarantee £80 million of the total transfer fee, with an additional £5 million based on performance metrics.
However, their cautious approach opened the door for Tottenham, who were more decisive in negotiations and agreed to a fully guaranteed £85 million package. With other prospects like Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson also off the table, Manchester United and INEOS are realizing the necessity of substantial financial commitment to avoid being left short in midfield this season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are eyeing two midfielders, Alex Scott and Aurelien Tchouameni, as they look to strengthen their squad. The latest updates from Spain indicate that Manchester United is poised to make a significant bid, reportedly exceeding €100 million, to acquire the talented French midfielder. “In Tchouameni’s case, the club that desperately desires him is Manchester United. This interest isn’t new, but the English side is reportedly ready to offer a substantial sum to sign him,” Romano shared.
On his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that Tchouameni, formerly of Monaco, has always been considered the ideal profile for Manchester United. “What I have consistently stated, and what I also affirm today, is that internally at Manchester United, Tchouameni has always been seen as the perfect signing for midfield. A top player with an elite mentality, world class—he’s viewed as a suitable replacement for Casemiro,” Romano explained.
Despite the club’s determination, obstacles exist that could hinder the progression of this deal. Romano pointed out, “The first challenge is the salary. Tchouameni currently commands a substantial salary at Real Madrid. Presently, Manchester United has expressed to Tchouameni’s representatives during recent contacts that any potential move to the club would necessitate adjustments to his salary.”
The second major challenge revolves around Real Madrid’s current stance. With manager Jose Mourinho viewing Tchouameni as a vital component of his strategy, negotiations could prove tough unless United receives a green light from Madrid. “At this point, Manchester United has yet to receive any indication from Real Madrid permitting them to initiate negotiations for Tchouameni,” Romano stated. “Currently, they have not obtained a message from Madrid indicating a willingness to sit down and discuss an agreement.”
While Tchouameni is presently regarded as an integral part of Madrid’s plans, the pressing financial implications of a substantial offer from Manchester United could alter the situation. As Romano concluded, “Could he be the dream signing for Manchester United? Definitely. He’s a player they admire and desire, but at the same time, the Tchouameni situation could become complicated due to salary considerations and Real Madrid’s decisions.”
