Manchester United has made a significant stride in their summer transfer campaign by reaching an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for Carlos Baleba. The 22-year-old midfielder is anticipated to undertake a medical at Carrington following the thorough negotiations between both Premier League clubs, which culminated in a total fee of £70 million.

The deal comprises a guaranteed payment of £65 million, augmented by an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. This agreement marks a pivotal moment for United as they aim to enhance their squad strength, particularly in response to recent departures and injuries that have affected their midfield options.

The Red Devils have been busy this summer retooling their roster ahead of their Champions League return. In addition to securing Baleba, they have previously acquired Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United, which collectively demonstrates their commitment to rebuilding the team under the guidance of manager Michael Carrick.

United’s interest in Baleba is not a spur-of-the-moment decision. The club’s recruitment team has closely monitored his development for several seasons. They first expressed interest during the previous summer transfer window while scouting for prospects throughout the 2025-26 season. This long-term interest signifies that Baleba is a calculated investment for Manchester United.

However, amid the excitement of his impending arrival, it’s important to note that Baleba is currently recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained over the summer. This injury kept him from participating in Brighton’s recent match against Tromso, marking a delay in his transition to United.

Baleba’s career trajectory in English football has been rapid. Since joining Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023, he has amassed 112 appearances, although he only made 23 starts in the Premier League last season. His move to Manchester United illustrates the growing tendency of clubs to invest in young talent with considerable potential.

With Baleba on the verge of a move, he will also be following several key players who have departed Brighton this summer, including Jan Paul van Hecke, who transferred to Tottenham Hotspur, and Danny Welbeck, now with Chelsea. The evolution of both clubs promises to be closely watched as the new season approaches.
