Joao Gomes Signs for Aston Villa in £38m Deal

Aston Villa completes £38m signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves, strengthening their midfield after recent player departures.

Aston Villa has confirmed the signing of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves for a fee reportedly reaching £38 million. The deal includes an initial payment of £34 million, with the remaining £4 million contingent on performance-related add-ons.

The 25-year-old’s arrival represents Villa’s second significant signing this summer, following the club-record acquisition of fellow midfielder Johan Manzambi for £59.5 million. This move comes as Villa looks to reshape its midfield, particularly in light of the recent sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and a long-term injury affecting Amadou Onana.

Unai Emery’s side is also in a period of transition, with speculation surrounding the departure of attacker Morgan Rogers to Chelsea in a blockbuster deal valued at £117 million. Additionally, Lucas Digne is on the verge of exiting Villa Park, as Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly preparing to activate his release clause set at around £8.5 million.

In the wake of these developments, Villa is expected to seek a replacement for Digne, targeting former Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan, who currently plays for AC Milan.

Gomes concludes a three-and-a-half-year spell at Wolves, where he made an impressive 130 appearances after his transfer from Flamengo in Brazil. He has also earned 10 caps for his national team.

Wolves’ technical director, Matt Jackson, praised Gomes for his professionalism and talent, stating: “Joao deserves everything he gets from the game. He’s the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is.” Jackson also noted that Gomes was unfortunate not to make Brazil’s World Cup squad, as he has consistently performed well.

Jackson added, “He brings tackling, ball carrying, and mobility to Aston Villa’s midfield, and I would expect him to become a very popular player with supporters at Villa Park.” With the midfield now bolstered, Villa fans will be keen to see how Gomes integrates into the team during the upcoming season.
