JD Vance outlines the U.S.’s strategy of economic pressure on Iran, claiming it’s more effective than ever amid rising tensions.
Economic pressure is the United States’ “most effective tool” against Iran, according to U.S. Vice President JD Vance. Speaking on a podcast, Vance described the current situation as “a delicate dance” with both countries applying pressure on each other. He noted, “what has been true over the last couple of weeks is they felt a lot more pressure than we have.”
Vance’s comments follow recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who described the U.S. intention to implement the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country” against Iran. Trump also issued warnings of severe financial penalties against nations aiding Tehran in evading sanctions, branding the initiative as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
Vance remarked that while Americans still face elevated gas prices, there has been a “substantial” decrease due to increased U.S. oil and gas shipments from the Strait of Hormuz, aided by military support. However, recent data showed a decline in ship traffic through the Strait, with only ten crossings observed on Monday and just two on Sunday, a stark contrast to the average of about 130 ships per day before the conflict.
He highlighted that Iran’s main leverage lay in its access to the Strait, emphasizing that if the U.S. could secure enough oil and gas exports, it might alleviate some energy costs for Americans. Vance asserted that Iran is facing consequences for attacking commercial ships, and the U.S. will ensure that Iranian forces are unable to continue these actions. “I think we’ve been quite successful,” he claimed, echoing Trump’s earlier assertion that Iran was “on the ropes.”
Vance elaborated, stating, “Do they want to have their economy strangled for the rest of time, or do they want to have a better relationship with the West? That’s always been the option that the president has put to these guys.”
