Guardiola Discusses Italy Coaching Opportunity

Pep Guardiola met with Paolo Maldini and Leonardo to discuss the Italy national team manager position, but prefers to continue his sabbatical.

Pep Guardiola has reportedly been given the chance to take over as Italy’s head coach after engaging in face-to-face discussions with Paolo Maldini and Leonardo in Barcelona. Despite the allure of such an ambitious role, Guardiola has repeatedly emphasized that he is content enjoying his sabbatical and has no immediate plans to return to the managerial scene.

The meeting, described as more than just a brief encounter, took place over the weekend and follows the circulation of photographs showing Maldini and Leonardo in Spain. It is understood that the Italian Football Federation views Guardiola as their top choice for the national team, currently in search of new leadership.

Guardiola, who previously managed Manchester City, has spoken openly about his desire for a break from football. He stated, “From a mental standpoint, I don’t miss anything at all. I started managing at 37, and my entire life has been bound to football. Now, I want to try and discover life, to be happy doing other things that have nothing to do with football.”

Expressing his current priorities, he continued, “I’m trying to figure out what my life will look like. I decided to stop because I want to take a bit more care of myself. I want to spend more time with my children and with my father, who is 95 and still with us. I’ve reached the age of 56, I’m no longer young, and the way you see things changes as well. I’m still adjusting to this new phase, but it’s going pretty well.”

While Guardiola remains the federation’s ideal candidate, they are also evaluating other possibilities. Previous Italy coach Roberto Mancini and Juventus legend Andrea Pirlo have emerged as potential alternatives, although it has been reported that Antonio Conte has already secured a deal to assume the head coach position.

The interest in Guardiola extends beyond Italy, as other national teams are also monitoring his situation. Following England’s recent struggles in the World Cup, some pundits have suggested Guardiola as a candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel as manager of the Three Lions.

The Italian side is on the hunt for a new leader after Gennaro Gattuso’s departure, which resulted from the team’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. Whether Guardiola will reconsider his sabbatical remains uncertain, leaving the federation to explore all options as they await a decision on their future direction.
