Despite significant layoffs in the tech sector, Google’s parent Alphabet adds nearly 12,000 employees, signaling confidence in future growth.

In a revealing turn of events amidst a wave of job cuts across the tech industry, Google’s parent company Alphabet has announced a substantial increase in its workforce. Between June 30, 2025, and June 30, 2026, Alphabet added 11,830 employees, boosting its total headcount from 187,103 to 198,933.

During a recent earnings report, Alphabet showcased impressive second-quarter figures, reporting a significant 24% increase in revenue year-over-year, amounting to $119.8 billion. Notably, the company recorded its largest headcount surge in the second quarter of 2026, with over 4,000 new hires accounting for more than one-third of the net hiring in the past year.

While many tech giants, including Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft, have executed significant layoffs over the past couple of years, Alphabet’s hiring remains striking. Earlier in 2023, Google laid off 12,000 employees and has continued to implement smaller rounds of cuts that have affected thousands in total. Just recently, a notable rally occurred at Google’s Mountain View headquarters, where around 4,500 employees signed a petition for stronger job security protections.

In tandem with its hiring efforts, Google has also adjusted its outlook for capital expenditures in 2026 to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion, increasing from an earlier estimate of up to $190 billion. The firm emphasized that the demand for its AI infrastructure continues to grow at a pace outstripping available capacity. This growing focus on AI signals where the company intends to direct its resources and workforce moving forward.

This expansion, in stark contrast to prevalent layoffs in the industry, portrays Alphabet’s optimism and strategic positioning within the tech landscape, emphasizing its commitment to AI and future market needs.
