Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori advocates for elite signings like Guimaraes and Vinicius to enhance the team’s success in the upcoming season.
Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori is urging the club to pursue top-tier signings this summer, emphasizing the need to acquire players like Bruno Guimaraes and Vinicius Junior to solidify their position at the top of the Premier League. The Italian player believes that recruiting elite talent is crucial for the Gunners to build on last season’s successes.
Reports suggest Arsenal is close to securing a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Guimaraes. The North London club has reportedly agreed on a £75 million transfer fee, bridging the gap between their initial offer of £70 million and Newcastle’s valuation of £80 million. Guimaraes has expressed eagerness to join Arsenal, making it clear to the Magpies that he prefers the move to north London.
Calafiori stressed the importance of such quality signings, saying, “Of course we are on that level now, we are on top. We want to win the league again and we want to be even better than last season, if we can, so we need those kind of players, I think.”
While Guimaraes seems a feasible addition, the pursuit of Vinicius Junior is considerably more complex. The Brazilian forward has caught Arsenal’s attention, but Real Madrid’s enhanced contract offer has complicated matters. The Gunners remain hopeful, particularly since Vinicius’s current contract ends next summer, allowing the possibility of a free transfer if he does not renew or opts for a move to Arsenal, which reportedly would include attractive financial terms.
Despite the buzz surrounding prospective transfers, Arsenal’s immediate focus is on their performance on the pitch. Recently, the squad faced a challenge during a pre-season friendly, losing 3-1 to Real Betis in Dublin. Calafiori shared his concerns about the team’s preparation, particularly with the return of World Cup stars. He noted, “I think it’s going to be a tricky start to the season because of that. All the big teams are going to have this problem and of course we’re still waiting for them. I hope they’re going to be really in form and ready to help us. In 10 days we’re going to be playing the final so we need to be ready.”
