Liverpool’s Curtis Jones is nearing a £30m transfer to Inter Milan as he seeks a new challenge in Serie A after a tough season at Anfield.
Inter Milan are reportedly close to finalizing a deal to acquire Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones as the Serie A champions aim to strengthen their squad. The Italian club has identified the 25-year-old as a key target to revamp their midfield options ahead of the upcoming season.
According to reports, Inter Milan is closing in on a transfer deal valued at £30m for Jones. The Italian side has been long-time admirers of the academy graduate and appears to be making significant progress in negotiations. While the final details of the transfer are still being ironed out, optimism is building in Italy that the deal will soon be confirmed.
The Nerazzurri have pursued Jones persistently, having previously seen their efforts to acquire him rebuffed by Liverpool. Back in June, Liverpool turned down a verbal offer of £21.7m from Inter, insisting on a valuation of approximately £35m for the player, who has just a year remaining on his current contract. However, discussions in recent weeks have seen the gap in valuation narrow considerably.
Liverpool has remained firm on their stance throughout the summer, seeking a fee that adequately reflects Jones’s experience in the Premier League and his homegrown status. The Reds are now open to parting ways with the midfielder, looking for a fee that aligns with the £30m package Inter recently paid to sign Djed Spence from Tottenham.
This isn’t the first time Inter Milan has shown interest in Jones. The Italian champions previously targeted him during the January transfer window, submitting a loan proposal with a purchase option, which Liverpool promptly rejected.
A transfer to the San Siro would mark the end of a significant chapter for Jones at Liverpool. He joined the club’s academy at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks to become a regular fixture in the first team. Since making his debut in 2019 under Jurgen Klopp, he has made a total of 228 appearances, contributing several important goals along the way.
Jones’s desire for a fresh start follows a mixed season, where, despite making 49 appearances in all competitions, only 18 were starts in the Premier League. He faced challenges in securing a consistent position in the midfield under new head coach Arne Slot. Despite Slot’s intentions for Jones to remain, stalled contract negotiations and his inclination for a new opportunity at Inter make a summer exit increasingly probable.
Upon confirmation of his move to the Giuseppe Meazza, Jones will join England international John Stones, who recently joined on a free transfer from Manchester City, as well as Spence, who also made a summer switch from Tottenham.
