BuzzFeed is making significant workforce reductions, announcing that it will lay off 35% of its employees as part of a strategy to enhance profitability following a recent acquisition by entrepreneur Byron Allen. This move will affect approximately 180 positions within the company, spanning its various divisions, including HuffPost and Tasty.
The layoffs were disclosed in an SEC filing, where BuzzFeed outlined that the cuts are aimed at streamlining the organizational structure and cutting operating expenses to preserve cash flow. The media company reported having 507 employees across five countries as of December 31, 2025.
BuzzFeed anticipates that the job cuts will result in estimated charges ranging from $6.5 million to $8.5 million, which are expected to be recognized mainly in the third quarter of 2026. Additionally, the layoffs are projected to yield annualized savings between $29 million and $32 million.
Byron Allen’s acquisition involved his company securing a 51% ownership stake in BuzzFeed for a total of $120 million. The transaction, finalized in late May, included $20 million in cash at closing and a promissory note of $100 million due five years later, accruing 5% interest annually.
Allen has ambitious plans for the media platform, envisioning combining BuzzFeed and HuffPost to create a free streaming service. His goal is to develop a platform laden with premium and user-generated content that would compete directly with YouTube. Earlier this year, Allen expressed confidence in his strategies, stating, “I’ve done much harder things. They don’t have problems that are that big. The money is the easy part. The strategy is to really grow this.”
In addition to his work with BuzzFeed, Allen recently secured a two-hour comedy block on CBS, taking over the time slot previously held by “Late Night With Stephen Colbert.” This new initiative features episodes of “Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen” followed by the comedy show “Funny You Should Ask.”
