UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledges continued support for Ukraine during his first official visit amid escalating tensions with Russia.
Andy Burnham has vowed to maintain pressure on Russia during his inaugural visit to Ukraine as UK prime minister. Meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Burnham chaired his initial meeting of the “coalition of the willing,” a group formed by the UK and France under former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.
During the meeting, Burnham emphasized the coalition’s commitment, urging the US Congress to intensify economic sanctions against Russia. The UK government plans to share blueprints for British-manufactured components for the Scalp missile, enabling Ukraine to produce this weapon domestically.
At the trilateral meeting with France and Ukraine, Burnham called for allies to tighten their air defense measures to protect Ukraine. “This is the moment to keep up the pressure on Russia, the moment to squeeze their ability to fund this illegal war,” he stated, commending the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
Burnham remarked on the ongoing Russian military efforts to target missile production sites, questioning, “Who started the fire? That’s the question, isn’t it?” This meeting also highlighted discussions about missile interceptors, which will be key to Ukraine’s defense strategy moving forward.
Amidst increasing Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, including a shopping center strike that left at least 16 people dead, Burnham reiterated the UK’s strong backing for Ukraine. He laid flowers at a military cemetery in honor of Ukrainian soldiers and received an award from Zelensky for the UK’s unwavering support during an independence day event near St Sofia Cathedral in Kyiv.
On Ukraine’s 35th independence anniversary, Burnham conveyed a powerful message: “The Ukrainian people should be in no doubt: the UK is behind you today and for as long as it takes. Our support will not waver, as Ukraine’s security is our security.” This visit follows Russia’s threats regarding the reported use of British drones by Ukraine.
Contained within this escalating conflict, Ukraine has increased long-range attacks on various Russian targets, including oil refineries and a logistics center for the online retailer Wildberries. The UK government confirmed it would permit defense contractor MBDA to declassify information regarding Scalp missile components, which are designed for precise targeting.
Ukraine has also requested additional Patriot interceptor missiles, with Zelensky advocating for 360 units to bolster its defense against Russian ballistic missiles. The supply of these systems has dwindled due to the ongoing conflict, making Ukraine vulnerable.
Defence Minister Luke Pollard emphasized, “We’re sharing blueprints for the Scalp missile to aid Ukraine in defending against this illegal invasion that’s now claimed many lives.” He noted the ongoing need for various weapons to counter Russian cruise missiles and enhance overall air defense capabilities.
In a rebuttal to Russian claims of escalation, Burnham articulated the UK’s commitment to support Ukraine in its self-defense efforts, a stance held consistently by his predecessors. The visit coincides with the Russian government’s acknowledgment of its ambassador to the UK departing London, though it does not indicate a desire to downgrade diplomatic relations.
As the conflict continues, deaths and injuries from military exchanges escalate, including reports of casualties in recent drone strikes in Russia and additional Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
