Lily Hooper’s body recovered after intense search in NSW raises concerns over communication error during rescue efforts.
The body of missing Australian hiker Lily Hooper has been found as officials look into a miscommunication that incorrectly reported she was alive. Following eight days of extensive searching, her body was airlifted from bushland in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales (NSW), south-west of Sydney.
Lily, 18, an experienced hiker, was reported missing the previous week, prompting an extensive search operation involving around 1,000 volunteers. Initial reports suggested that she had been found alive after surviving for several days in the wilderness.
However, within moments of the misleading news hitting the airwaves, NSW police confirmed that she had unfortunately been discovered deceased. State Premier Chris Minns, alongside NSW police commissioner Mal Lanyon, extended their apologies to Lily’s family for the erroneous reports, which created a brief yet painful period of hope for her parents.
At a state parliamentary hearing, Minns had initially stated that search crews discovered Hooper alive, equipped with only half a bottle of water. This claim was rapidly retracted as police confirmed that she had not survived. Minns expressed his intentions to reach out personally to Hooper’s family to offer his condolences.
“The government, myself – we’re profoundly sorry,” said Minns. The comments from officials reflect the challenging nature of communication during large-scale searches in remote locations, as highlighted by NSW State Emergency Services commissioner Mike Wassing, who stated that codes are often assigned during such operations.
Wassing did not elaborate on the specifics of the communication failure that led to the incorrect reports, but acknowledged the complexities involved in coordinating resources across remote terrains. Lanyon spoke on the importance of reviewing police protocols to prevent similar issues from occurring in future search operations.
As the investigation continues, a post-mortem examination is set to take place in the coming days to formally identify Hooper’s body and determine the cause of death.
