Aston Villa has officially signed Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for a club-record £65m, also reaching an agreement for Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG.
Aston Villa has made a significant move in the transfer market by confirming the signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for a club-record fee that could reach £65 million. The acquisition comes at a pivotal time as Villa anticipates the departure of Ollie Watkins, who is on the brink of a £50 million transfer to Al Hilal.
As reported, Villa is committing a fixed amount of £47.5 million for Jackson, which could escalate to the record figure depending on performance-related add-ons. This transfer surpasses the previous record of £59.5 million set when they signed Johan Maznambi earlier this summer, marking the second occasion this window that Villa has updated their transfer benchmarks.
Jackson, primarily brought in to take over from Watkins, was not included in the match against Brighton and is currently undergoing medical examinations ahead of his move to the Saudi Pro League.
The financial arrangements for Jackson came to fruition after Villa sought to bolster their squad, especially following a missed opportunity to secure AC Milan’s Rafa Leao, who opted for a move to Galatasaray.
In addition to the Jackson deal, Villa has reached a verbal agreement to sign Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain. Reports indicate that Liverpool had also shown interest in Mbaye this summer, but the player has become a priority for Villa.
Mbaye, a right winger, made 24 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, registering three goals and two assists. His addition is part of an overhaul that Villa is experiencing, having recently let go of several key players, including Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, and Lucas Digne. Further changes in the squad are anticipated, with Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez also likely to leave.
Several new faces have joined the club this summer, including Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi, Leon Goretzka, Joao Gomes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Matteo Ruggeri, and now Nicolas Jackson.
In a press conference before Villa’s fixture against Arsenal, Unai Emery addressed the club’s strategic decisions regarding transfers as the Deadline Day approaches on September 1. “We took some decisions because it’s good for the club. We tried to compete as good as possible, but some situations are clear,” he remarked.
Emery further emphasized the balance needed in the squad between experience and youthful talent. He expressed confidence in the new signings, stating, “It’s the right way and decision. We don’t want to be a club to sell players, but our responsibility is there. For the club, it’s a good deal.” He acknowledged the challenge ahead but remains optimistic about the direction the team is heading.
