Arne Slot has confirmed he turned down the Netherlands national team position, opting to remain in club football after leaving Liverpool.
Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has officially announced his decision to forgo the opportunity to lead the Netherlands national football team. Slot, who parted ways with Liverpool in May, was identified as a strong candidate to succeed Ronald Koeman.
Slot clarified his stance after discussions with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), emphasizing his preference for the day-to-day challenges of club management over the international stage at this moment in his career. He had been viewed as the top choice for the role after Koeman’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.
In a statement to Voetbal International, Slot remarked, “At this stage in my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.” He stressed that his withdrawal from negotiations was not influenced by financial disagreements, clarifying, “I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week.”
Despite his admiration for the national setup, Slot asserted that the timing was not right for him. He acknowledged his aspiration to coach the national team in the future, stating, “It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me.”
Slot’s exit from Anfield was a significant event, following a season where he led the team to a title win but ultimately was let go due to a fifth-place finish and tensions including public disputes with star player Mohamed Salah. His decision to decline the national coaching job represents a setback for Liverpool, as accepting would have enabled the club to mitigate some financial responsibilities related to his severance package. Slot’s contract with Liverpool was reportedly valued at around £25 million.
Previously, he had also turned down an offer from Fulham, indicating that he is selective about his next career move. His choice to remain out of international management positions him as a high-profile figure still in search of the right club opportunity. The KNVB will now have to explore other candidates ahead of the upcoming Nations League commitments, while Slot appears poised to wait for a promising club project to materialize.
