SpaceX announces a $100bn project for a new launch site in Louisiana, creating thousands of jobs and aiming to support ambitious space missions by 2029.

SpaceX, the rocket company led by Elon Musk, has unveiled plans to construct its largest launch site ever in Louisiana, a project estimated to cost $100 billion. Scheduled to commence next year, this initiative, dubbed Starbase, Louisiana, spans an impressive 125,000 acres and aims to enhance SpaceX’s capacity for launching missions beyond its current operations in Texas and Florida.

The new facility will not only significantly contribute to the aerospace industry but is also set to provide a substantial economic boost to the region. According to SpaceX, it will support thousands of Starship launches annually, with missions targeted for Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and further into the depths of space, aiming for its first flight in 2029.

More than 3,000 direct jobs are expected to be generated by the launch site, as reported by the company. In addition, the Louisiana Economic Development agency indicates that the average salary for workers at this base will exceed the region’s current average by 192%. Furthermore, over 8,100 additional jobs are projected to arise indirectly as a result of this expansive project.

The agency has proclaimed that this historic undertaking will position Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace endeavors. It is anticipated that the facility will significantly improve launch frequency and broaden access to space technology.

This announcement follows a series of ambitious directives set by Musk for SpaceX, which include not only ambitious plans to reach Mars but also projects focusing on artificial intelligence and the construction of data centres in space.

Earlier this year, SpaceX, alongside Musk’s other venture Tesla, declared plans for a separate $16.8 billion artificial intelligence chip manufacturing plant in Texas to accommodate escalating demands amid fluctuating industry landscapes.

Despite the optimistic projections for growth and expansion, newly listed SpaceX faces ongoing pressure to demonstrate profitability amid its extensive plans for development.
