Argentina Sanctioned with 21-Game Ban by FIFA

Argentina faces a severe 21-game ban from FIFA due to a brawl at the World Cup final, impacting multiple players and the football association.

Argentina has received a substantial sanction from FIFA for their involvement in a brawl that erupted after the 2026 World Cup final, where they faced off against Spain. The incident followed the match, which Spain won 1-0, and resulted in serious repercussions for both players and the Argentine Football Association.

Among the most severely punished is Leandro Paredes, who has been given a 10-match ban for his aggressive actions during the altercation. He was seen grabbing Spain’s defender Eric Garcia by the throat and subsequently throwing midfielder Gavi to the ground. This penalty effectively sidelines Paredes from international soccer for an entire year.

FIFA has not only targeted individuals involved but has also imposed a hefty fine of $321,000 on the Argentine Football Association, reflecting the severity of the situation. Teams and players have 10 days to request a motivated decision, which will be made available on FIFA’s legal website, with the option to appeal the decisions.

The chaos unfolded on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, immediately following the final whistle. Players from both sides were caught up in the melee, with defender Nahuel Molina allegedly throwing punches at Rodri, prompting confrontations. When Garcia rushed to intervene, Paredes escalated the situation by forcefully jabbing him in the throat, witnessed by assistant referee Tomaz Klancnik. Video captures show Paredes then shoving Gavi, leading to a more intense conflict.

Additionally, assistant coach Roberto Ayala was filmed being part of the tumult, reportedly holding Garcia by the throat and then striking Dani Olmo. Paredes’ red card from the night was later revoked from FIFA’s records, but disciplinary proceedings commenced against several Argentine players: Paredes faced three assault charges, while Molina was charged with two assault counts and one of unsporting behavior, and Almada with unsporting behavior.

The fallout from the brawl has not only led to FIFA’s disciplinary measures but has also drawn public attention to separate incidents involving purported racist behavior among supporters. In the wake of the World Cup, actor Samuel L. Jackson appealed to Black fans on social media, urging them not to support Argentina due to issues related to racism.

Furthermore, comedian Rickey Smiley shared an emotional story about his son facing racial abuse from Argentina fans during the tournament, admitting it was distressing to see his child demeaned by supporters.

This situation continues to develop as Argentina grapples with the consequences of the brawl, which not only affects players but also raises broader questions about the cultural challenges faced in the sport.
