Newcastle’s Matthias Jaissle emphasizes the need for squad adjustments as they prepare to face Liverpool in the upcoming Premier League match.

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has indicated that the club needs to make “adjustments” to its squad as the summer transfer window approaches its end. Jaissle took over from Eddie Howe in early August, and his tenure has already seen the departure of several key players, including Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon.

During a press conference, Jaissle expressed the necessity for improvement, stating, “We will count on him,” referring to Amar Dedic, one of his former players who recently joined Newcastle from Benfica. When asked how many new players he would like to bring in, the coach remained cautious, saying, “I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it’s depending also if players are leaving as well.” He acknowledged the club’s management is aware of the pressing needs and affirmed, “We are all aligned.”

Amidst these changes, Jaissle remains optimistic. He mentioned, “I tried to not overthink beforehand. I was aware of the challenge… and among such a journey there will always be stones among the path, but we need to get rid of them. We need to see the opportunities, the chance in all these things.” The new coach recognized that the players are committed to facing the challenges of this transitional phase.

Four of Newcastle’s seven summer signings are under the age of 21, including 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax. Jaissle emphasized the importance of giving young talents time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League. “You know that usually you need to have the adaptation time, therefore I said that you need to be patient with them and give them the time. It’s always a process,” he explained.

As Jaissle pointed out, the club’s focus is on developing young talent, stating, “That’s a goal from the club to work with young talents, to develop them, and this is nice to see because that’s a clear identity of the club.” Reflecting on his experience in Salzburg and Saudi Arabia, he believes he can contribute positively to Newcastle’s growth.

The upcoming match against Liverpool will serve as an early test for Jaissle, who will have been at Newcastle for just a few weeks. “The timing was not ideal, but in football, you cannot always have the perfect timing, so we need to do the best out of it,” Jaissle remarked. He noted that while the players are not yet 100 percent ready, the support from fans could play a crucial role in their performance.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the match, not only due to Jaissle’s new leadership but also for the tributes planned for Newcastle and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan, who passed away earlier this year. Jaissle acknowledged the significance of the occasion and expressed his excitement, stating, “With the tributes, it’s already a special game. It will be an outstanding atmosphere. I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it so I can’t wait.”

Newcastle will face Liverpool on Super Sunday, with coverage starting at 4:00 PM, followed by kick-off at 4:30 PM.
