Johnny Depp in Talks for New Pirates of the Caribbean

Johnny Depp may return for the next Pirates film alongside Margot Robbie, as confirmed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer during D23.

Margot Robbie is reportedly set to lead the next installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, with talks underway for Johnny Depp to return in a supporting role. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer made the announcement at D23, revealing that discussions with Depp are ongoing. “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,” Bruckheimer stated.

Insiders indicate that the sixth film will focus on Robbie’s character, while Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is expected to serve more as a side character. This marks a notable shift from prior plans, as Depp seemed ready to move on from the franchise following his last appearance in 2018. During that period, original “Pirates” screenwriter Stuart Beattie suggested that Disney was pivoting away from Depp’s version of Sparrow.

By May 2024, Bruckheimer disclosed that two different “Pirates” movies were under development: one reboot and a female-led film headlined by Robbie, although she had not been officially cast at that time. However, developments changed by September 2025, when Bruckheimer confirmed that one of the projects had “kind of dropped out” but Robbie remained involved as the lead in the ongoing project.

Historically, the groundwork for Robbie’s participation dates back to June 2020, when it was announced she would be attached to a female-led “Pirates” film. This project was intended to be an original narrative rather than a direct continuation of the existing franchise. Bruckheimer confirmed later that the two separate development paths were converging into a single project.

As discussions about the potential for Depp’s return progress, it is noteworthy that his involvement in the “Pirates” franchise coincides with a broader Hollywood comeback. The actor is currently starring in Paramount’s adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” set to premiere on November 13, along with another film, a Lionsgate thriller titled “Day Drinker,” expected for release in 2027.
