Xabi Alonso Analyzes Chelsea’s New Set-Piece Expert

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has shared insights into the club’s strategic move to hire set-piece coach Austin MacPhee from Aston Villa. Alonso emphasizes that the decision reflects Chelsea’s ambitions to excel in all areas of the game, aiming to narrow the competitive gap at the top of the Premier League.

MacPhee, renowned for his contributions in enhancing Aston Villa’s set-piece effectiveness under Unai Emery, joined Chelsea in late July, already making an impact during a demanding pre-season. In a conversation with the Men In Blazers Network, Alonso stated, ‘We want to have the best possible specialists in their departments. For sure, Austin has experience in the Premier League.’

The appointment is vital not just for set-piece expertise but also for enriching the coaching team’s grasp of the Premier League’s unique demands. Alonso noted, ‘It helps a lot’ to have seasoned professionals like MacPhee and Ben Roberts, who were integral in navigating the previous season.

Understanding the specific challenges of the English top flight is crucial as Chelsea embarks on a reshaped season. Alonso articulated the importance of surrounding himself with knowledgeable voices who can prepare the team for the tactical nuances of the upcoming matches.

Amidst coaching staff changes, a key focus for Alonso will be revitalizing the performance of Cole Palmer, whose previous season was hampered by fitness issues. Alonso elaborated on Palmer’s recovery strategy, stating, ‘The first step must be entirely physical, as the player has to feel fully recovered and be 100% ready in order to be able to give his utmost on the pitch.’ He added that confidence and tactical understanding would also be essential for Palmer to thrive.

Chelsea’s preparations culminate on Monday when they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage, marking their Premier League opener. This match will serve as a first competitive test for the revamped squad and their specialized coaching staff. With the inclusion of MacPhee and a reinforced team dynamic, the Blues are poised for a focused and challenging season ahead.
