Following a tragic school shooting, Thailand suspends gun licenses and embarks on tighter gun control measures to prevent future violence.
Thailand has taken immediate action by suspending all firearms licenses in the wake of a devastating school shooting that claimed nine lives. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced this measure shortly after the cremation of the teenage shooter, who killed his grandparents and six others before taking his own life.
The Prime Minister’s directive halts the issuance of licenses to possess, purchase, or carry firearms until a new gun control law is enacted. This temporary suspension reflects the government’s urgent response to this tragic event, which occurred in Nonthaburi, north of Bangkok.
In a statement, Anutin called for stricter regulations and harsher penalties related to gun ownership. He expressed that he had aimed to push for reforms during his earlier terms as Minister for the Interior and Health due to rising gun violence in recent years. The government’s hands have been tied by persistent challenges in enforcing these laws effectively.
It was reported that on the morning of the incident, the 14-year-old shooter fatally shot his grandparents before proceeding to his school, where he killed five staff members and injured another student who later died in the hospital.
The Prime Minister’s call for reforms follows earlier attempts to implement strict measures after previous incidents, including a noteworthy shooting in 2023 involving another teenager. Observations confirmed that the boy had used a modified pistol and had potentially purchased it online.
Despite having licensing laws that seem tough on paper, Thailand struggles with a severe issue of unregistered firearms; records indicate there are millions of them in civilian hands. Recent data reveals that more than 10 million civilian-owned guns exist in Thailand, making it the country with the highest ratio of firearms in Southeast Asia.
The government has also announced plans to create a designated amnesty period, during which individuals can surrender illegal firearms or inherited weapons without facing penalties. Furthermore, measures are being taken to improve oversight on firearms issued to law enforcement.
In response to the school shooting, the Ministry of Education has introduced a safety plan that includes enhanced entry security and expanded mental health counseling resources for students.
As the country mourns, representatives from all walks of life, including the king and Prime Minister Anutin, have expressed their sorrow over the incident. Many mourners gathered for the traditional multi-day Buddhist funerals, which involved paying respects to the victims at the local temple.
The emotional aftermath of the shooting reverberates throughout Thai society. Families and friends of the victims are reeling, while many recognize a pressing need to address mental health issues among young people to avert similar tragedies in the future.
