Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis launches a defamation lawsuit against Crystal Palace over a controversial banner displayed at Selhurst Park.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has initiated legal action against Crystal Palace for defamation due to a banner displayed at Selhurst Park last season. This banner, which depicted Marinakis holding a gun to the head of player Morgan Gibbs-White, became a focal point of controversy shortly after Gibbs-White’s unsuccessful transfer to Tottenham, leading him to instead sign a contract extension with Forest.
The incident took place last August and involved additional unsubstantiated claims regarding the Greek billionaire’s business dealings. Following an investigation by the FA in November, Crystal Palace was charged and fined £50,000. However, Marinakis feels that this penalty does not adequately address the damage to his reputation and is determined to pursue the matter through the courts.
Currently, Marinakis’ case hinges on the belief that Crystal Palace had a responsibility to prevent the banner from being unfurled and to ensure its quick removal once it was displayed. Marinakis aims to legally establish how accountable the club is for allowing such an image to be shown.

According to FA regulations, clubs are tasked with ensuring that their supporters act in a manner that is not deemed improper, abusive, or offensive.
In defamation cases, three main aspects can form grounds for a lawsuit: the publication of false statements, the creation of false images, or the allowance of such images to be displayed. A representative from Sky Sports has reached out to Crystal Palace for their comments on the ongoing legal situation, while Nottingham Forest has declined to provide any remarks regarding the unfolding matter.
