Trump Defends Infantino Amid FIFA Controversy

Trump warns FIFA will struggle without Infantino’s leadership amid pressure for his resignation after failed commercialization efforts.

President Donald Trump came to the defense of FIFA chief Gianni Infantino on Monday, sparking discussions as Infantino faces increased pressure to resign following a controversial attempt to sell stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private investors.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that FIFA would be making “a terrible mistake” if associations chose to replace Infantino. He warned that the tournament “will never be as successful or profitable again!” if Infantino were to step down.

Infantino has played a significant role in FIFA’s recent commercialization strategy, which led to this year’s World Cup being the largest and most profitable ever, hosted collaboratively by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. However, a significant backlash followed his proposal to create a subsidiary that would allow private investors to acquire up to 20% stakes in a spinout company related to the tournament.

This initiative was met with criticism, and Infantino later issued an apology as regional soccer governing bodies, including UEFA and CONCACAF, expressed their discontent. They accused Infantino of breaching trust “through deception” with the failed proposal, stating, “When trust is broken through deception, when an individual places himself above the collective that entrusted him with authority, that duty has been abandoned.”

Furthermore, they noted that the attempt to sell an interest in the World Cup reflected a fundamental breach of trust with the institutions FIFA exists to serve.

While many in world soccer oppose Infantino’s leadership, he still retains support from national federations in Argentina, Mexico, and Qatar, who have voiced their backing for his continued role.

Infantino’s well-known close relationship with President Trump has been scrutinized, particularly during the 2026 World Cup preparations. This relationship has brought additional attention to Infantino’s leadership amid the current scrutiny.

Another dimension to the controversy involves Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital, which supported the failed plan. Kushner’s brother Jared is notably Trump’s son-in-law, intertwining the dynamics of business, politics, and world soccer.

As the future of Infantino hangs in the balance, these unfolding events reveal the complexities and challenges within FIFA’s governance structure as it navigates a rapidly changing sponsorship and investment landscape.
